Our smartphones do everything for us now … except maybe the actual workout or diet, that is. Long gone are the days where we used our phones just to make phone calls. Now, they help us stay in contact with others through social media, entertain us with games, keep us up to date with what is happening in the world through news apps and more.

One of the newest types of apps are the workout and weight loss apps. These are designed to help us stay fit and healthy in a way that is suitable for each individual person.
There are apps designed for those who want to lose weight and for those who want to bulk up. There are apps for people who want to workout outdoors, for those who want to workout at the gym and for those who want to workout at home.
Let’s take a look at the best free apps for working out and losing weight.

Lose It! App

Lose It! App
Lose It! is a free app that works on both iOS and Android devices. It allows you to check what sort of calories are included in the food you want to eat. It also allows you to track how your exercise regime is going. The Lose It! app has even been reviewed by Forbes:
“Just input your current weight and your goal weight, and Lose it! will give you a fairly accurate estimate of how many calories to eat per day, and how long it should take to reach that goal.”
Best of all, the Lose It! app is like a full community, as you can link up with other people. This support network is encouraging and allows you to remain accountable for what you are doing.
Another feature of the app is that it allows you to scan barcodes in your grocery store and find out exactly how many calories are in foods your shopping for.

My Fitness Pal App

My Fitness Pal App
My Fitness Pal understands that being healthy is about more than just understanding your calorie intake. Through the free iOS and Android app, you will learn to look at all aspects of life that will keep you healthy. Best of all, the app can also be downloaded to your desktop.
It has been created by Johnson Health Tech and NetPulse, and is designed to make sure you know exactly what is happening in terms of your personal health.
The My Fitness Pal app can be synced to the NetPulse data, through which users can integrate their exercise regime and diet with the platform.
The app is designed to make sure you are motivated to exercise and to eat healthily. This app is perfect for those who like gym workouts, as it links it with virtual machines to monitor achievement … although I mainly just use it as a calorie and macro counter.
According to Marybeth Thompson, head of MyFitnessPal’s business development:
“This integration shows the equipment industry recognizes the importance of apps like this. It’s a way for members to track their holistic health activity inside and outside club.”
To date, the app has more than 30 million users worldwide. The food database contains over 2.5 million products and more are added very regularly … which is awesome!

My Net Diary App

MyNetDiary App
My Net Diary works on understanding that you don’t just have to change your diet and exercise regime, but also your entire behavior.
This app focuses mainly on changing your diet and helps you track your nutrition and calorie intake. However, it also looks at your workouts and how this links to your diet. According to BlackDoctor one of the apps main selling points is that it’s:
“Charts and graphs provide powerful motivation as they show how far you’ve come.”
That’s really the part I think is cool.
The app is really user friendly. It has a massive database of food products on file, meaning that you can simply scan a barcode to learn its nutritional values. In other words, if you want to have that pre-packaged meal on the go when you are in a hurry for lunch, there are no problems in doing so.

Fooducate Nutrition Scanner App

Fooducate App
The Fooducate Nutrition Scanner is another free app for both Android and iOS. The app is designed to help you be a smarter shopper. It contains over 200,000 products in its database, basically turning into your personal shopper as you go through the grocery store.Real Simple explains how easy it is to use:
“When you scan a food’s barcode, you receive not only that product’s nutrition facts, but also details the manufacturers don’t want you to notice, like trans fats, additives, preservatives and high fructose corn syrup, as well as healthier alternative products.”
This is the perfect app for those people who already understand their own workout and are happy with how this works, but want that extra little bit of help for their dietary needs.

GymGoal ABC App

GymGoal App
GymGoal ABC is another really good app that focuses specifically on weight lifting. It is like having your own personal trainer by your side at all times.
It is a free app with some 280 workouts. They have written instructions and great animations to help you along the way. Also, there are 52 different routines you can follow, each of which can be adjusted to four different fitness levels.
An added benefit according to Men’s Fitness is that
“While you can’t log your daily workout routine, there are calculators for computing target heart rate, BMI, BMR and body fat percentage.”
Through the body map menu, you can find out workouts and exercises for all your specific problem areas. For instance, for people who want to tone their arms up, the app has over 50 moves that will help tone your biceps in no time.
This is a great app to combine with one of the nutrition apps, thereby giving you all the information you need. However, it is very much an app designed for those who don’t mind going to the gym.
These are just a few of the apps that are available. It is all about taking the time to review what works for you and where your interests lie.
I’d recommend starting with a free app … at least to test it.
